Why change?

I’m taking a break in the series about Changing to provide a little context.  You may feel perfectly content with your life.  If you are then, you will have no interest in a tirade about making changes.  I may be the odd duck but at every step in my life I questioned the path I was on.  Was this the best I could do?  Is there a better way?

Mostly I was too concerned about my responsibilities to risk getting off course.  I was afraid of the road less traveled. Still I wondered.  If I failed to take that road and my life to date has been conventional and dull, retirement means I have another chance.  I have a lot of life left and few constraints.  Where do I want it to go? And who do I need to become to get there.

You may not want anything more than you already have.  If that is true then you don’t need change.  If you ever asked yourself “Is this all there is?” , take a moment and read this post from a year ago.   Are you satisfied with an ordinary retirement?  And if the answer is no then get ready to change.

Ralph, when we stop aiming for something in life, that’s when we are finished.

      Bill,
      That’s where changing comes in.

I’m fairly content with my life as it is right now. My wife however, feels there’s room for some change 🙂 But seriously, contentment doesn’t necessarily mean “rut” for me. I’m always on the lookout for something knew, and willing to take advantage of an opportunity when it presents itself.

    Hansi,
Does opportunity knock on the door? Mug you in the park? Wait demurely on the sidewalk? Or is there an itch which forces you dig up the back yard looking for it?

    Hi Ralph,

the way I see it life is full of changes and we have to accept that and move with it. The moment we stop is when life becomes stagnant. It’s the same with business. Even though you prefer things to stay the way it is something happens that forces a change and there is every possibility that if you do not adapt to those changes that you will lose business and worst case scenario go broke.

      Sire,
You are right. Change is something we deal with all the time and resist because it is imposed on us. We can’t control our environment. I’m talking about change that we choose like a new vision for life, improving physical health or learning a new skill or mastering an old one. I think it is important to take charge of the change instead of just adapting.

It all depends how you look at it. Take the changing business environment, that can be compared to a change in the way you live your life. Things around you change and then it’s up to you to decide if you wish to change with it. As you get older you can decide to sit back and let life pass you by or you can decide to do something about it.

          Sire,
True enough. Are you in control or not.

    Hi Ralph,
Life is all about change…no 2 days are exactly the same… well at least in my life there are time I would love to reproduce the previous day.

Don’t misunderstand me I love it… the constant challenges and opportunities that creap into my daily activities…

Change also helps us think outside the square.

    Great post Ralph.
    Cheers

      Bryan,
Outside the square. I guess that’s a down-under way to say what we call outside the box. Out side the square is the place to be. Square is boring.

I think often people will take the comfort of the known over the more interesting path of the unknown, which is why people are often unwilling to consider change.

It’s a shame, as we are born with curiosity, and to stop giving into curiosity is to lose something very important, I think.

      Richard,
I think we are taught to be afraid of making mistakes as well. The unknown is clearly a place where mistakes can happen and instead of seeing mistakes as lessons we avoid them altogether.
