Retirement Adventure:Sweep out the cobwebs

Clearing my desk and my brain.

With this post I wrap up the posting for this week and next week both here and over at Cantankerous Old Coots because the Carlson’s are heading to Lake Tahoe for a few days. The last time we took a break was over a year ago when we spent Christmas on the coast, our first ever retreat for the California branch of the Carlson clan (a small select number including me, my wife and both sons). A good time was had by all despite the lack of cell phone coverage and internet connections at our rented digs.

To the top!

The plan was to do it again but to head for the mountains this time so after some back and forth about timing, we booked a cabin at Lake Tahoe for late March. Now that it’s here, one son can’t join us but you can’t win them all. We don’t ski so it is not clear what we will do. We may take ski lessons anyway – to make up for not being able to afford ski weekends in college. We may try showshoeing. We may just sit in the hot tub and look at the lake. In short, we will be dropping the schedules and routine of our normal home life for chaos and uncertainty. And we need it!

Some quiet time as well.

For me, I’m taking some reading. It’s time to reread Evil Plan, finish the 4 Hour Workweek and check out Guy Kawasaki’s new book, Enchantment. I need to spend some quiet time going over the current version of my evil plan and looking for ways to do it better and take less time. It needs a refresh. I need to look at what I am doing that doesn’t bring enough benefits and decide if it needs to go or just be farmed out. In short, I need to take my retirement lifestyle evil plan to a higher level- and to do that I need to stop and take a breath. I need to survey the landscape and consider taking a different route to the top;

Clear the cobwebs out of my brain.

I expect to come back with a fresh perspective some new ideas and renewed energy. I’ll have my laptop and may have time to respond to comments but it won’t be my first priority. I’m going to be sweeping the cobwebs out of my brain with the hope that I can see better where I am going;

Maybe the Heavenly Flyer will help.

      Bob,
      I’m a sucker for requests. Zipline video coming up.

    My wife and I don’t like cold so we wouldn’t ski either. But, we really like Lake Tahoe. The hot tub, reading, sleeping late, and eating well would be our plan.

    Enjoy!

      Bob,
      You might like a Tahoe cabin in the snow with a fireplace, views of the lake or the mountains, a nice fire and a hot tub. No need to go out at all.

    Well the zipline didn’t disappoint. =)

    I second Bob’s comment – really want to see a video of you doing it, from your perspective as you go down!

    Have fun. Go for snowshoeing over the skies; much safer. Enjoy the hot-tub and stay Evil, or..get more Eviler 🙂

      Hansi,
      It looks like we might have weather during our trip. Don’t know how this will crimp our style but evil is definitely on the menu.

    Hi Ralph,
    The zipline video is a close as I will get to enjoying the great view. Heights and me do not mix.

    Have a good break and look forward to your video when you return.

    Cheers
    Bryan

      Bryan,
      Then enjoy the video. Big storm last night. Hoping the roads will be clear by Monday. The pass into Lake Tahoe is about 7,000 feet and narrow. If the storm continues it may not be clear when we get there.
