Retirement Lifestyle Design
Labor Day is as good a time as any to review the retirement thinking that we are calling outrageous retirement. Outrageous retirement is just another approach to lifestyle design. Because the rules change with retirement, it is important not to limit your thinking because of life habits you accumulated over a working career. Because most people keep the same thinking when they retire, they will regard any retirement that drops the baggage and embraces a new focus and new priorities as outrageous. And they will miss the fulfillment that can only come with breaking new ground. Don’t be most people!
Maybe you are still working but retirement is getting close. Now is a good time to plan the retirement lifestyle you want and get your thinking right. Some recent posts have explored some of the thinking to help you define the retirement lifestyle you want – and then to make it happen.
Drop the baggage
Start by looking at your lifestyle accumulations – both mental and physical during your life so far and decide what is useful for retirement and what is unnecessary baggage.
What do you love?
Then think about what you love (or want to love) doing and what you need. Your retirement lifestyle should let you concentrate on those things and eliminate things you do because you always have or think you should.
Who do you want in your retirement lifestyle?
These are enough to get you thinking seriously about how to design your retirement lifestyle and make certain that it is not just a continuation of your working lifestyle. Don’t be satisfied with ordinary in the last great adventure of your life. Make your retirement outrageous.
