The Top 10 Reasons to Post Daily

Nailed it! My picture is a perfect 10!

Trying to keep myself up to the standards set by blog leaders like James, I developed 10 top reasons to come up with a new post for my blog each day:

  1. Accountability to myself

  2. Commitment to my readers

  3. Engagement with my readers

  4. Make Google happy

  5. Prove that I am worthy of attention

  6. Build my web presence

  7. Improve my communication skills

  8. Grow my self confidence

  9. Build readers

  10. ……

Oooops.  I seem to be missing that number 10 point.  It’s right on the tip of my tongue……

Help me out here, if you can.  Tell me what that last point is and complete my list.

So does that mean I shouldn’t post daily?

#10 To help improve your Alexa ranking.

I thought Alexa wasn’t important. But it does make 10. Thanks, Eleanor.

  • Sudeep January 26, 2010, 10:41 am

So far Alexa gets the votes.

  • TheInfoPreneur January 26, 2010, 1:32 pm

    To fuel your fire!

Number 10 is the most important question you have asked yet on this site, watch how many comments you get because of it!

Ralph you are on a roll, very clever!

I’m a slow learner but I eventually catch on, except for the times when I am too stubborn.

  • winnie January 26, 2010, 2:21 pm

    10. Because I said so!!!

I am trying to tone down the ego.

    Hi Ralph!

I can’t tell you what your #10 should be, but I can tell you why I’ll never post more than 3 to 5 times a week…

Give my readers time to digest what I have to say… the content is worth it.
Give me time to craft awesome content instead of mediocre rapid fire content
Give me time to devote to site promotion
More time for comments to roll in. I’ve noticed that on most of my articles the first comment arrives 24 to 48 hours after it is published
Fewer articles are skipped by my regulars
I can get away with writing longer than usual articles
    I have fewer deadlines
It shows that I’m not JABWOK (Just Another Blogger Wearing Out Keyboards)
Because Quality killed the Quantity star years ago
    Because I can’t think of a number 10 either 🙂

    Kind regards,
    Steve.

oh crap! why don’t your comments allow me to include simple markup in them? My previous comment was supposed to include an ordered list of 10 items.
.-= Steve Youngs´s last blog ..Anatomy Of A Goal =-.

  • Ralph January 26, 2010, 4:57 pm

What do I need to do so that you can markup the comments?
Do I see a debate about quality and quantity between you and James coming?

  • Steve Youngs January 26, 2010, 10:26 pm

It looks like it might be theme specific. I just tested a ordered list in the comments on my blog… it didn’t work out either 🙁

But what was interesting is that if you look at the comments in your dashboard, you’ll see the list as it should be. IMO, that’s a bug. I don’t know yet if the bug is in the theme, or in WordPress itself.

And while we are on the subject of comments, consider turning on threaded comments, Ralph. They make for much more pleasant comment reading. Turn them on in your dashboard: Settings -> Discussion -> Enable Threaded (nested) Comments.

Do I see a debate about quality and quantity between you and James coming?

I doubt it. I don’t think neither James, nor I, have anything to prove. 🙂

    Kind regards,
    Steve.

Did a little digging… turns out that some HTML tags have been deliberately turned off. See: $allowedtags in wp-includes/kses.php. I’m not sure why, but I’m guessing that there is a valid reason.

    Steve,
Thanks. I will turn on the threaded comments.

    Allyn,
You are right. It is way more complicated than a simple rule to post each day. Right now I just want to grow readership and learn more about satisfying readers. My ultimate goal is to make money but I am still learning. I like what you have been doing on your blog. No bullshit.

  • Travis January 28, 2010, 11:10 am

Because you don’t have anything better to do.

    To keep out of trouble.

    To kill you TV addiction

Sorry couldn’t resist having a little fun. Honestly one a day is great if you can come up with interesting topics every day but to post just for the sake of it can work the other way.

Oh yeah, Allyn, I’ve spent time at Griz’s blogs. I also bought Janet’s book because I was too lazy to hunt through 3 years worth of posts. Highly educational sites and well worth the time4 and effort, much like yours, Allyn.

    Hi Ralph,

Nice post. I think there’s a difference between building engagement and adding value to your readers.

So, I’m going to go for that for number 10.

    Adding value to your readers.

Keep up the good work Ralph.

  • Ralph January 29, 2010, 1:48 pm

Got it. Thanks Matthew. Incidentally Akismet thinks you are spam too. At least I’m in good company.

Taking Allyn’s point above about the guy who blogs 20 times a year and earn’s 10k per month.

It’s the value of the content that determines popularity,5 period.

Tim Ferriss post’s infrequently, 3 times this month. Yet his Alexa ranking is 5,737 his lsat post has attracted over 160 comments.

Not much to add, most everything I would say has been said.

I will give you one of my motivations.

Google weights URLs, i.e., permalinks, heavily by age. When you post every day, you’re building up an asset base. You can change the title, the content, and within reason the article itself, as long as Google can find it residing where’s it’s always been, it’s value increases over time. Posting every day isn’t really an issue, getting as many excellent permalinks into the index is. Daily is a good way to do that.

    Matthew,
It clearly makes a difference what your objectives are which is a dimension I didn’t factor in. Shot term I want readers. Long term I want to monitize.

    Dave,
I didn’t know that posts get older and better. Still you want them read.
