More On Comments

I have been trying to understand the psychology of comments.  Why people comment and why they don’t.   As you might expect, bloggers can relate.  I just came across a thread at Social Photo Talk where Aaron discusses I Almost Left a Blog Comment.  He raises the issue of the hassle of commenting when you are reading blogs on Google Reader.  This is something I never considered in my list.  I suggest you listen to what he says and join the discussion.

If you figure this out please let me know!

I think there a few good ways to get people to interact with your posts.

Encourage comments by asking what people think, create a conversation in the comments section.
Have commentluv to encourage people to contribute, create lists of other sites and ask people to list their own.

A lot of different ways but as to yet, I’m not entirely sure which works better than others

I will. I just had another thought, though. What if everybody left a comment. That wouldn’t be good either.

    Why wouldn’t it be good?

You would spend all day responding or else it would take the 5 hours you alot for sleep.

That was interesting, glad to see I’m not the only one that sometimes does that lol. I think part of the issue is definitely clicking from your RSS reader to the blog post – as I said on my comment over there, I open all the posts I want to read and comment on in new tabs from my reader, but sometimes I forget what I wanted to say in the first place.

I also don’t like commenting if all I’ll say is ‘Good job!’ cause I think it gets a little redundant.

I’m with you though Ralph; if everyone responded all the time it’d take forever to reply to everything (as it is, I’ve seen me do nothing but comment on other people’s blogs for two hour stretches in the right frame of mind).

    Heather,
I’m thinking what the right frame of mind to make comments for two hours would be?

  • Heather February 4, 2010, 4:59 pm

I blame James. It was back before I regularly commented anywhere, then suddenly WHAM – blogs to comment on. For two hours.

Usually they don’t get anywhere near that but the time’s slowly been creeping up again… 😉

That James! Causing trouble wherever he goes.

Comments is the best way to engage your readers as well as connecting with them. 🙂

    Walter,
So I am learning. I think you were the first to point me in that direction.
