Enough about me!

It’s time to listen.

I’ve been focused on my ideal retirement. I’s natural to focus close to home on something that you think about every day. But the problem is that you aren’t me. I may think that I can understand what is important to you because we are both human beings. I may extrapolate and generalize my conclusions about human nature and think that I get it; but ,bottom line, people are different- even weirdly different. I say this thinking that if you are really very different from me then it makes you weird. From your perspective, however,I’m the weirdo.  There aren’t any winners.  So today let’s just cool it.

Today, I’m going to shut up. I’m not going to tell you what to do. I’m not even going to tell you what I do. I’m not going to share my hope and dreams again because you’ve already heard them. They are what they are and you will decide what relevance they may have for your life. I’m on my suicide roller coaster. No need for you to jump aboard. You should build your own.

Speak up!

What I’d like to know today is what is your life mission. How do you want to be spending your time and what would you like to hear people say about you when they are driving home from your funeral. I think that is the essence of retirement lifestyle design- enjoyment and impact. It’s all personal. And it’s not one size fits all – or is it?  I’m no expert.  You tell me.

Yes Ralph, we are all different, a good thing too.

As for my epitaph, well if people said “He was good family man, a man’s man who enjoyed himself, liked a laugh and could laugh at himself” then that would do me.

They might also add “it was rumoured he liked a drink”.

      Bill,
So far, we’re not so different. I think there must be more.

Hopefully they might comment that in retirement he was a much more caring person than when he was working for a living!

      Steve,
That’s one that I’d like to be able to claim too.
