Grilled Cheese Sandwiches meant Velveeta

Growing up in the 50’s, Velveeta meant cheese. Grilled cheese sandwiches were a treat and my mother wouldn’t make grilled cheese sandwiches without Velveeta. It was also her cheese of choice for macaroni and cheese. I don’t think I ever considered that Velveeta wasn’t really cheese until I was out on my own at which time people started talking down Velveeta. I didn’t buy Velveeta for my family and we made our cheese dishes with REAL cheese.

It wasn’t until a few years ago that I was reminded just how good Velveeta was. Real cheese just didn’t have the creamy meltiness of Velveeta in a grilled cheese sandwich. In addition, you don’t have to burn the bread while you wait for the cheese to melt when you use Velveeta.

 

So what if it’s not really cheese? From what I can tell, it’s not any less healthful than REAL cheese and every time I enjoy Velveeta, it’s like going back to my childhood..

Velveeta was old news in the 50’s

I discovered that Velveeta was old news even in the 50’s when it came into my consciousness. So it is only my personal decision to call it 50’s nostalgia. Velveeta was invented in the 20’s and remains popular even today.. Whatever your age, you are likely to remember Velveeta and quite possibly you still use it today.     Ah, Velveeta is so full of nostalgia for me. On the other hand, I never saw it as having a bad rep (I’m SO provincial). What REALLY had the bad rep, for me, was SPAM, though I now feel that while SPAM was often overused, it was still filled some great needs.

    I was remembering that it had transfats or some other trendy bad thing but checking the ingredients, other than the saturated fat it doesn’t seem so bad. We used to eat spam but I never have been tempted to eat it lately.

    Although I wouldn’t touch that stuff with a ten foot pole, I got to admit it makes wonderful trout bait when fishing. The stupid fish gobble it up…to their own demise.

    We had Kraft cheese slices, bloody tasteless crap!
    I think Kraft were/are an American company?

    I much prefer regional cheese, especially with added fruit.

      Bill,
      Maybe the taste wasn’t great but it sure melted good. I’m not sure that the Kraft slices are the same as Velveeta. Kraft was indeed an American company but these days, it seems that everything is owned bu you Brits.
