At different times I have described the governing philosophy here at RalphCarlsonBlog. It has evolved over time from a frivolous, self indulgent and ultimately impotent ego trip to it’s present state as a window into the laboratory that is my current life.

Retiring raised my thinking about life to a new level and gave me focus that eluded earlier. When I defined myself as an employee, dependent for fulfilling my social obligations on pleasing individuals and organizations who would give me money in exchange, was dependent. Retirement gave me independence and the frightening glimpse of the hidden dimensions of life I had never recognized earlier. I changed how I thought about my life.

All along, the definition of my life style was largely out of my control. My life was a byproduct of the job I held. In my head, if I wanted to change that lifestyle, I needed to change my job. This system works fine so long as you keep working. When you stop working, it leaves you a cipher.

That was my dilemma. Who was I without my job and what would give my life meaning from now on? This might have taken me to a new commitment such as volunteer work or a serious hobby which would give me another facade to hide behind but I discovered a mind-blowing alternative which goes by the name of Lifestyle Design.

It took me in a whole new direction.

Lifestyle Design – Start with Belief

You life up to now doesn’t define you

The first step in lifestyle design is belief. You have to be convinced beyond doubt that you can design your perfect lifestyle and then make it happen. This is probably the most difficult step of them all, particularly if you have spent 20 years or more letting someone else define your lifestyle. I f you ever had dreams of a perfect lifestyle they have probably been buried and forgotten. It is hard at midlife or beyond to let yourself hope and dream. You have settled for a life of limitations and dependence. You have forgotten the power that the dreams of your youth possessed. You have discounted your youthful enthusiasm and optimism. You probably don’t know anyone who is even thinking about taking charge of their life.

Don’t give up on yourself!

If this is you, then read on. There are other people like you who still have the dream of changing their life. More important there are people who are making it happen. Age is not an issue. Education is not an issue. Personality is not an issue. All that really matters is that you believe that it can happen for you. At this point you don’t even need to have a detailed plan for your life. This will come later so long as you believe that you can.

What if?

But maybe you are wracked with doubt. You believe that the price tag that your boss has placed on you is correct. You don’t think that you have anything else to give and that your value is limited. If you have enough belief to read this post, then you have enough belief to start the adventure. Start by asking yourself ‘what if?’ to any question you have and then telling yourself ‘why not?’ If you start down a challenging path doesn’t each hill you climb make you stronger? Then just decide to start.

Change your thinking.

Start your adventure by training your mind to think differently. Start a reading program to change your thinking. The book I recommend first is The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz .  Get a copy and start to believe you can.

Are you retired? re-TIRED? or just tired?

Retirement lifestyle design has a big problem.

That problem is the word retirement.  I’m not sure where the word retire comes from but as it stands it fails miserably at inspiring. It sounds lame. It sounds boring. It sounds… well, tired.

If you are TIRED in your re-TIREment, who’s surprised?

Retirement is probably a bad word to use to describe the last part of your life because it reflects a negative vision and suggests retreat instead of charge. You stop working. You stop earning an income. You stop dreaming.

But what do you start?

You know what happens when you drive someplace new without a map. You end up somewhere you don’t want to be.  So if you retired without a plan and a mission, expect the same result. And expect not to be too excited about life.  Expect to be re-TIRED.

Now stop and think.

How do you want to finish your life? Where do you want to go? What’s your vision? When you aren’t moving toward a goal you are falling back. It’s just a fact. If you don’t have a mission that gets you out of bed energized each day, then you are re-TIRED. What was your plan? How hard have you been working it? And how big is your dream? If you are re-TIRED, it means you don’t have one.

Retire re-TIRE!

If I had my way, we would retire the word retire from the dictionary because it sets up the wrong expectations and dynamic for a time of life that should be a blaze of glory. Retirement should be a time when you marshal all the skills, talents and resources from your life to this point and pull our all the stops to live life to the max. One of the problems is that by the time most of us retire, our bodies are beginning to fail. There isn’t the energy and resilience. It takes some effort to get it going every day. Who gets excited about being re-TIRED. It wears me out just thinking about it.

So get a dream and make a plan!

Rather than drifting into retirement casually and letting life happen, retirement lifestyle should be built on a mission and have a plan. And that mission has to be one that energizes you. When you have a mission in your retirement, that mission will create energy to overcome the complications from losing physical strength and keep your attitude positive.  Without a mission, retirement is boring and routine. Retirement is re-TIREment, each and every day.

Are you re-TIRED?

So my question today is: what is your mission? What mission gets you excited and fills your day with activity and generated enough energy to overcome the inertia of life? Or are you just re-TIRED?  What is your dream that makes the difference?

Are you retired? re TIRED? or just tired?

If you missed part one of Why Changing is so hard you might want to read it first.

You can Change!

The ability to change yourself is one of the things that distinguishes humans from animals. Humans can transform themselves. They can visualize a different version of themselves and make decisions that make that vision a reality.  It’s not a fantasy that happens quickly like magic. It takes a long time and requires work and commitment . Most people, however, refuse to believe that change is possible for them. You will hear them say things like “That’s just the kind of person I am.”, “I could never do that.” They believe that people are born with talent, skills and attitudes. They don’t believe that the skill they observe in other people is the result of years of effort. And they refuse to accept their potential for change.  And so they suffer. Continue reading

If I had my wish,

many things about my life would change. I’d be twenty pounds lighter and in better shape. I would write effortlessly in a persuasive manner, master my emotions and relate to people easily. I would be full of confidence and attack each day eagerly and with great energy. I would be a master of my finances, spending only a portion of my income and managing a business which is growing and profitable.  And that’s just the start.

I haven’t reached any of those goals  - Yet.
