Site Visitor Report for October 2010

StatsOct2010 Site Visitor Report for October 2010

Another month, another look at the visitor stats. Not a big change but the numbers are up for the most part. Pageloads grew from 76 to 83 on a daily average basis. Unique visitors are essentially unchanged and first time visitors is down slightly but returning visitors is up. I take the most encouragement from the returning visitors. Those are readers that find value in the information and return. Returning visitors have overcome the loss from last month and a little more.

These stats are reassuring but don’t give me help so far as changes go. I will take them as reassurance that what I am doing is at least ok and continue the same level of activity and time commitment. One other frustration is that so far Google hasn’t deigned to rank my blog. I don’t know their criteria but since it is an accepted acknowledgement of blog success, I keep looking for it to change. I remain a PR 0. I am not whining at this point but from now on it will be part of my status report each month. My Alexa rank at the end of October was 949,466. If I remember, it was slightly higher last month. By including the rank, I will have a better understanding of my progress for November.

Why I started

About a year ago I began to hear about Web 2.0 applications and social networking.  People said that the future belonged to Web 2.0 and that the individuals who mastered it would control their niches.  At the time I was beginning to form a plan to develop a business network using the web.  I believed the buzz and began to explore social networking.  I joined Facebook. I set up a Twitter account.  I started this blog as a personal statement of who I am.

I can’t say that I had a vision of where I planned to go or how the pieces fit together.  I was borrowing visions from others who seemed to know what was going on with the expectation that things would sort themselves out along the way.  I am an optimist after all.  The blog is coming along; the business network or even the social network, not so much.

My experience so far

So how is it going?  I wish I could say that social networking is working for me.  Or that I could even understand what it would mean for it to be working for me.  When I say social networking, I mean Twitter and Facebook.  Right now I have a Facebook account and two Twitter accounts.

Facebook

Facebook has produced some results meaning that I have connected with people from my past and exchange some casual information with them.  I know things that I didn’t know before about people who weren’t in my thoughts until Facebook.  That isn’t a bad thing but neither is it a good thing because my relationships with them are just above superficial.  I have picked up some people that I have work relationships with now and some with whom I had previous work relationships.  I have not picked up any new relationships from Facebook and I haven’t developed deeper and richer relationships or pushed them in different directions because I don’t see how to do that.

Twitter

Twitter is quite different.  As soon as I joined, people started following me.  I have no idea why.  Somehow I selected some people to follow.  I don’t even remember how but some of them were the people that decided to follow me.  Maybe that’s the reason they followed but what escapes me is what benefit anyone has from having me follow them.  I have found some people that I respect and they often Tweet links to web posts- either theirs or someone they recommend.  Occasionally, I Tweet with some kind of status update- like anybody will care but I feel bad about not joining the community.  Twitter advocates suggest that you can ask questions and someone will answer.  Not true in my experience.  Apparently you can search for Tweets with keywords but so far I haven’t been able to rouse myself to the effort.

What was I expecting?

I was expecting something unexpected.  I don’t know how else to put it because Web 2.0 is supposed to open a whole new world of social networking.  It actually turns out to be not unlike regular networking at which I suck.

What am I missing?

One of the life lessons that I keep rediscovering is that most of my limitations are self imposed.  I have stepped up the effort in many areas of my life and pushed myself to learn and do different things.  I think that part of my problem is that my vision of the potential of Web 2.0 is limited by what I know right now.  The people that are advocating Facebook, Twitter and other Web 2.0 vehicles see farther or pick up a richer color spectrum that I am missing.  Has anybody broken through this barrier and taken themselves to a higher level with Web 2.0 and having done that provide me some clues about what efforts or techniques I might use to break through myself?  If so drop some breadcrumbs in my comments.

When do you need a new idea?

2089519539 d7acee7700 m2 When do you need a new idea?

I love new ideas.

They are carefree and exhilerating. They promise exciting advancement and change. They are cute and fresh. Those new ideas are quite a contrast to the old ones cluttering up my brain and filling my day with commitments and just plain work. New ideas are free spirited race horses which are a big contrast to the plodding workhorses I follow down the furrows each day. It’s no wonder when I find a new idea that it attracts me. New ideas are fun and free wheeling, full of the easy promise of the unknown. ‘What if‘ is so much more enticing than putting in the work. Continue reading

Social Media Benefits for Health

I’m not exactly thinking about health today. Today I’m thinking about how social media has changed the game (or at least the potential game) for us seniors. (As an aside, don’t you hate the word seniors? I’d rather be called an old fart than a senior.) The benefits from social media are still largely missed by old folks. These data are over a year old but they demonstrate that people 65+ have plenty of catchup to do to take advantage of the internet and social media. In 2009, only 38% of the over 65 population used the internet. I hope that number is higher today but the numbers are so low that each web literate person should take charge of helping some senior to learn to navigate the web for their own good. What I learned from my readers

I don’t know what I don’t know.

Because of that blind spot it is hard to fix serious problems. You just don’t see them. So what can you do? One of the ways to find out what is in those blind spots is asking people what they see. Even if you don’t know the right questions to ask (or what you don’t know that you really need to find out), it is amazing what you can discover when you keep your mind open. Most people have a poor understanding about how they appear to others. They miss their good points and put too much emphasis on their flaws or even worse imagine virtues that aren’t there. Without the perspective of an outside observer, it is easy to fool yourself about how you appear to others. I am the perfect example. Continue reading

Today’s Retirement Question:How did you get here?

Outrageous Todays Retirement Question:How did you get here?

Sometimes web surfing brings fantastic results; sometimes, it is entertaining and sometimes it is just a terrible waste of time. I had a thought today that I would like to talk about the planning process. I was feeling lazy and decided that I might find a video already up that would save me from thinking. I did get a new appreciation about the range of information posted in video form. I learned how to make a Big Mac at home, remove the membrane from spareribs and that Brittney Spears has a song called ‘Outrageous’. I briefly considered making it the theme song here on RCB but after viewing it carefully decided to look further. This leaves me hungry for barbeque but still short a blog post so I’m putting my thinking cap on and writing-  like I should have done an hour ago. Continue reading

Checking my progress

What is the meaning of life?

Does a tree falling make a sound if there is no one to hear it? How many angels can fit on the head of a pin?  Today my head is whirling with unanswered (and maybe unanswerable questions). Is my fuzzy head the result of overindulging on Thanksgiving turkey or something more significant? Does it matter what is causing it? Continue reading

Site Visitor Report for August 2010

AugStats Site Visitor Report for August 2010

No Growth in Readers or Returning Readers

August has been stable. With the work or keywords and greater focus on the niche topic of retirement lifestlye planning, this is disappointing. The goal is to build a greater number of returning visitors from the search engine traffic. Returning visitors are not growing and in fact dropped again in August to 8 per day.

Is Branding the problem?

I think that it is too early to conclude anything here  about content but a recent post on David Risley’s Blog suggests a possible problem with branding. David says that bloggers ought to be able to figure out who you are and what your blog is about quickly or they will move on. Using my name for the blog may be ok but I need to have a good byline that clues new readers in about what the blog is about. Mine is ‘Finishing Strong’ which means something to me but is cryptic to new readers.

September Goal – Focus on the byline

My goal for the month is to create a better byline. If you are one of my returning readers and you have some suggestions, please share them. What brings you back to Ralph Carlson Blog and what should the byline be to make that clear to new readers. I appreciate you and my goal is to continue providing value but sometimes it is hard to see clearly in the middle of the action.

Site Statistics for July 2010 are in transition

StatsJuly2010rs 300x259 Site Statistics for July 2010 are in transitionWhat goes up must come down.  I can’t explain the big jump in page loads and visitors at the beginning of July but I can explain the drop.  I got some technical help and moved my blog from a directory to the main URL.   Since most of the traffic is from odd searches unrelated to the tightened focus.  Most of these visitors do not stay so this is not a big problem.  I am more concerned about returning visitors.   The returning visitors stayed relatively stable for July.  The July average is slightly lower than June (9 vs 10).  I think that the keyword work and some work in making my blog more visible to people and search engines is beginning to help.  For the past week, returning visitors is up in the low two digits.  I am hoping that tighter focus on my niche – outrageous retirement is making an impact.  I actually had visitors that googled retirement showing up, along with architecture and wordpress plugins.  This will all take time but I feel like I am finally on the way to focusing on a niche and improving the SEO

Time Management is Important

I am always interested in learning the tricks that successful people use. They have learned how to become more productive and skillful at their work and I can always stand improvement. As I keep reporting, I have difficulty in managing my time effectively. I keep picking up tricks and tools here and there but recently I discovered that David Risley had a post on his blog about the time management tips that he uses. Some of them are tools but most of them are just ways to help you concentrate attention on the task at hand and get more done. Continue reading
